Essential Oils for Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins around your rectum and anus. Hemorrhoids inside of your rectum are called internal hemorrhoids. Those that can be seen and felt outside of your anus are called external hemorrhoids.

Many adults experience hemorrhoids at some point in their life. There are certain risk factors like pregnancy and obesity (or wrong nutrition) that can make it more likely to get hemorrhoids, but sometimes their cause cannot be found.

Hemorrhoids can cause:

  • bleeding during and after bowel movements
  • lumps and swelling around your anus
  • painful irritation

Since hemorrhoids are caused by the swelling of your blood vessels, essential oils with anti-inflammatory properties may help to treat them.

Essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil before being applied to the skin (e.g. using fractionated coconut oil). Essential oils can also be inhaled from a few drops on a tissue or in a diffuser. Essential oils should not be taken internally.

Astringent essential oils such as Frankincense and Cypress promote the reduction of hemorrhoids:

1 drop of Frankincense oil or Cypress oil is diluted with water. Then soak a cotton ball and dab the hemorrhoids several times a day.

Other oils are Cinnamon, Clove, Peppermint and Tea Tree (Melaleuca)
