Natural Health for  your Family

Eucalyptus, orange, mint or lavender are plants that not only exude a wonderful scent: their essential oils can act like medicine. The effect of peppermint essential oil has been proven by science: studies show that it can solve tension headaches just as effectively as the drug paracetamol. Rubbed on the neck and temples, it has a cooling, muscle-relaxing and antispasmodic effect – and the fragrance has a calming effect through the limbic system.

This text will give you an overview of the various natural health benefits of essential oils and their vast area of application. Please also have a look at the different articles below, that all address specific health areas and issues related to respiration and breathing, sleep, emotions and mental health, sports and muscles, skin, digestion and much more.

Wintergreen against back pain

Wintergreen should help with back pain and muscle pain. The smell of the oil is reminiscent of eucalyptus, but it has a more analgesic effect and has a lower allergy potential. The main chemical component in Wintergreen, methyl salicylate, is used in topical creams and massage blends because of its soothing properties. In fact, Wintergreen and Birch are the only plants in the world that contain methyl salicylate naturally.

However, essential oils can be irritating the skin and must not simply be applied neat to the skin. Wintergreen mixes well with Fractionated Coconut oil and a few drops of lavender oil. Wintergreen relieves back pain because it promotes blood circulation. And lavender oil relaxes the smooth muscles. A massage of the affected body parts and joints with this mixture also helps rheumatism and arthritis patients.

You can relax your feet in warm water with a tablespoon of salt and cypress oil. And to prevent muscle soreness, add a mixture of rosemary and orange oil with household sugar to the bath water after exercise. Without the sugar, the essential oil would float on top and evaporate. Rosemary oil promotes blood circulation – and is said to have an antiseptic and antispasmodic effect. The scent of orange oil is good mood, because it goes through the nose to the brain.

How scent molecules keep you in a good mood

In the nasal mucosa, olfactory molecules meet 30 million olfactory cells. With fine sensory hairs, they capture the scent and transport it with their long extensions through the skull bone into the brain. The nerve impulses triggered by the scent end up in the part of the brain responsible for feelings and memories. Since most people associate fruity scents with something positive, such essential oils can influence our mood.

The natural health powers of the substances are manifold: If you have a cold, honey with thyme and clary sage can help. Chamomile and fennel help with stomach aches and a eucalyptus candy against coughs. If we inhale peppermint, eucalyptus or menthol for a cold, the essential oils reach the lungs and blood via our respiratory tract. They act like medicines, reduce swelling of the nasal mucous membranes and have an antibacterial and antiviral effect.

Essential Oils for children

Essential oils can be used for children’s natural health, however with caution: not all oils are suitable for children under a certain age, the oils should not be used internally with children, and due to the kids’ sensitive skin, they should always be diluted.

doTERRA has taken this into consideration when formulating a range of essential oils blends for children. The products in the doTERRA Kids Collection are pre-diluted with Fractionated Coconut Oil, and these blends are gentle enough for children of all ages.

Each of these kid-friendly blends is formulated with children in mind—their fragrance preferences, emotional needs, and most common health complaints. Color-coded labels and roll-on tops for the oils in the Kids Collection make application easy and fun. And while they are created with children in mind, don’t be surprised if you fall in love with a few of these blends yourself.

The individual blends in the doTERRA Kids Collection are:

Calmer™ Restful Blend helps your child relax and promotes sleep.
Thinker™ Focus Blend helps prevent mental distraction and reduce feelings of mental stress and fatigue.
Brave™ Courage Blend helps manage stress and feelings of anxiousness.
Stronger™ Protective Blend promotes a natural immune defense and is soothing to the emotions during times of distress.
Rescuer™ Soothing Blend reduces feelings of tension in the neck and shoulders.
Steady™ Grounding Blend helps balance mood and soothe upset feelings when emotions seem close to the surface.
